More than 50 people marched onto the steps of the New Zealand Parliament demanding immediate action from the lawmakers to save the endangered Maui dolphins. Ironically there were probably more protestors than the remaining dolphins on the West coast of the North Island. The numbers of Maui dolphins are down to 54 adults.
The government is expected to decide on interim measures to protect the dolphins from extinction. It is hoped it will not be too little too late.
A set-net ban is needed along the Taranaki coast with a broadening of the west coast sanctuary as well. The set-nets have been blamed for the killing of the world's smallest dolphins - the Maui.
